Palm Springs is a desert city in California approximately 110 miles (177 km) east of Los Angeles and 140 miles (225 km) northeast of San Diego. It is one of nine adjacent cities that make up the Coachella Valley (Palm Springs area).

Palm Springs is sheltered by the Little San Bernardino Mountains to the north, the Santa Rosa Mountains to the south, and the San Jacinto Mountains to the west. This geography gives Palm Springs its warm, dry climate, with 354 days of sunshine and less than 6 inches (150 mm) of rain annually. There is an average of only 17 days with measurable precipitation.

Golf, swimming, tennis, horseback riding and hiking in the nearby desert and mountain areas are major forms of recreation in Palm Springs.

Celebrities still retreat to Palm Springs and the city's economy now relies on tourism (primarily during the winter months), and casino gambling. Palm Springs is a city of numerous festivals, conventions, and international events.

Five star hotels, restaurants and attractions cater to tourists, while shoppers can find high-end boutiques in downtown and uptown Palm Springs, and world famous Palm Canyon Drive.

Palm Springs Aerial Tramway features the world's largest rotating tramcars which take you to the top of mount San Jacinto to an altitude of 8,500 feet (2,600 m).
